Equine-assisted psychotherapy (EAP) is a type of experiential horse therapy where horses play an active role in the therapeutic process. It offers the opportunity for participants to learn about themselves and others through activities with horses. The practitioner and client work together with the horses in equine assisted therapy / psychotherapy to facilitate connection, learning, growth and healing.
EAP is usually facilitated by a qualified practitioner along with a herd of amazingly intuitive equine partners. Sessions are held in a private, non-threatening environment which is physically and emotionally safe.
Through carefully facilitated activities and horse interactions, participants learn about themselves and their relationships with others. They are able to build self-awareness, improve confidence and self-esteem, work on social communication skills and create deeper relationships.
In this safe, openly curious and non-judgemental environment, sessions involve reflecting upon observations, thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. This experiential way of exploring self, relationship and other often creates deeply impactful awareness, acceptance and growth which may not be as easily noticed by solely talking about issues or problems. All our horse therapy sessions are trauma-informed and tailored for each unique client.
