Equine Assisted Learning and Therapy pony in Little River, near Geelong and Melbourne, Victoria.

Equine Assisted Learning

Equine-assisted learning (EAL) aids participants in self-discovery and the development of life and social skills through interactions with horses.

EAL is beneficial for children, adolescents, adults and groups who want to develop life tools and strategies. Areas include good decision making, assertiveness, boundary setting, empathy, communication and leadership. EAL moves beyond intellectual awareness and allows clients to experience in a tangible way how their behaviours, attitudes, and beliefs impact themselves and others. Structured individual and group activities with horses help clients to reflect on their experience through discussion and journaling.

Participants have the opportunity to identify patterns; understand their behaviours and beliefs; and move toward change in a non-judgemental way. EAL can also help individuals identify and process feelings. They can learn how to trust, along with developing self-control, self-esteem, a sense of responsibility and self-confidence.

Areas we work on include:

  • Teamwork
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Boundary setting
  • Awareness of self and others
